Catalyzing women social entrepreneurs in Madurai, India

In February 2017, EnerGaia team members visited Madurai, India to begin the set up of the bag and cage system and test the feasibility of our rural spirulina farming model.

We were happy to find that many materials needed for our system can be locally sourced at reasonable prices. Our hope is to expand the system at Antenna Trust to 1000 tanks by the end of 2017. This large site will become a training ground for women to learn how to work with our systems as well as the centre for collecting and processing spirulina.

At Antenna Trust, women are offered low interest micro-finance loans to provide them with capital for new business opportunities. Getting a loan to start one of our spirulina systems would help women to:

– close the 5x daily wage gap to reach income parity with men

– improve the nutritional health of their families, particularly Vitamin A and Iron levels

– create a new cottage industry for local economic growth.

We hope to help our work together with Antenna in India will increase health for all!
